The municipalities that form the geodestination are: Catoira, Pontecesures, Valga and Vilanova de Arousa.

The name of this geodestination already reminds us of the Way of Saint James. On one side, the Mar de Arousa-Río Ulla Route, with the municipalities of Vilanova de Arousa and Catoira, and on the other, the Portuguese Route with the municipalities of Pontecesures and Valga. The Ulla river is the backbone of this geodestination with a spot in the middle of the Arousa estuary, beyond the mouth of the river.

Heritage

The strategic importance is seen in the Torres de Oeste at Catoira, the ancient Castellum Honesti. They were built in the 12th century by Archbishop Xelmírez to protect Compostela from Norman attacks entering through the Arousa estuary.

The pazos, a type of Galician countryside traditional house similar to a small palace, are represented by two singular ones in Vilanova de Arousa: the Pazo do Cuadrante which is currently the museum Casa Museo Valle-Inclán and the Pazo de Baión surrounded by vineyards. Almost in the centre of the town are the Torres de Calogo, a Romanesque belfry of an ancient monastery.

Two important bridges link the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra: the one at Pontecesures and that of Catoira, which brings us closer to the Barbanza peninsula. Also in Catoira we can find a bridge of medieval origin Ponte Vella.

Another museum in Vilanova de Arousa is the Casa Museo Irmáns Camba typical stone building with the works of the Camba brothers, both Galician writers.

Natural reserves

At the bottom of the estuary, the mouth of the Ulla belongs to the sistema fluvial Ulla-Deza which includes the municipalities of Catoira, Pontecesures and Valga in this geodestination.
In Valga we can visit the Fervenzas de Raxoi e Parafita with a restored mill and a wooden walkway through the riverside forest.

And from the miradoiro da Cruz de Lobeira in Vilanova de Arousa we can enjoy views of the estuary and the Barbanza peninsula.

Festivals and gastronomy

This geodestination has a Festivity of International Tourist Interest to its credit, the Romaría Viquinga de Catoira, which recalls the wanderings of the feared men from the North in medieval times until they were stopped by Archbishop Gelmirez, the man who put Santiago de Compostela on the map of Christianity.

There are other festivals of tourist interest such as the Belén artesanal en movemento and the Festa da Anguía e mostra da caña do país, oth in Valga. Gastronomy is also present in the Festa do mexillón e do berberecho in Vilanova de Arousa.
