This part of the city is next to the river Lerez. The name comes from the word salmoira, the brine used in the sardine salting process.
The neighbourhood is comprised of narrow winding streets which hide numerous beautiful stone houses with their traditional exterior staircases, old fishermen's homes, which rub shoulders with other typical sailors' houses including the casas terreñas the casas con sobrado or the entre medianeras. There are still traditional houses finished with a mitre design, which in the 15th century were called the Casas de Outón.
