| Description |
Posío continues to be mentioned in the historical memory of the inhabitants of Ourense as the best park in the city. Not for nothing has it already been around for more than one hundred and fifty years since its creation in 1846. It was created as a botanical garden linked to the Chair of Physics, Chemistry and Natural History of the Institute of Secondary Education, for a long time the only one which provided educational services in the entire province. At present, the IES (Institute of Secondary Education) Ramón Otero Pedrayo, depository of this legacy in the same historical building, continues to be popularly called the Posío secondary school.
The grounds, which were originally not large, conserve a beautiful wrought iron lock and gates decorated with urns. The inside is distributed on three terraces whose use has become specialised with the passing of time. The upper level contains the children´s play area necessary to meet the demand in this area of city expansion. The central terrace, with access on both sides, is used as a walk with a paved floor and modern lamp posts since the last renovation. The lower level, proportionally larger than the previous ones, concentrates the gardens and some vegetation of interest such as the central walk formed by a double row of nine Canary Islands palm-trees each. One part of this section is currently used as a bird pond. The other preserves the historical atmosphere attributed to the grounds. The most outstanding element is the mulberry tree path which leads to the new site of the monument to the writer Lamas Carvajal.
The original botanical gardens came to cultivate about 200 different species and there used to be a herbarium which had around 500 plants.
SERVICES:Children´s play area, boulevard. Bird pond. Picnic area.
