Description

To reach Brañas de Pan do Zarco, we can exit the village of Murias in the direction of Balouta, following for the most part the course of the Pan do Zarco brook. The "brañas" (pastures), which are natural spaces with water, were used during certain times of the year for cattle grazing. Those of Pan do Zarco, from where we can see the Surcio Peak, belong to Murias and, nowadays, their constructions are the best preserved in the Os Ancares mountain range.
In the past, cattle used to be moved to this area for about four months of the year. The whole family would move there to live with the cattle. In addition to grazing for the animals, the plains were also used to grow cereals, which were an extremely important element in the diet of the area's inhabitants. The straw was used to make the houses' roofs.
Some houses still remain. They have a rectangular layout, are not very high and have slate roofs. People also lived in huts or "pallozas". In the centre of the "brañas" there is a fountain and, next to it, the last remaining "palloza".
